Oil on Canvas
33 x 23″
This work is a representation of the way societal standards can distort how young girls perceive themselves. It features a girl surrounded by a maze of mirrors, each mirror distorting her form in one way or another. The mirror’s warped images represent the manner in which beauty standards placed on girls, especially in their teenage years, can result in them viewing their bodies differently and hating it. Her unhappy expression alludes to the feeling of dissatisfaction and self hatred caused by it. To further express the feelings of melancholy, the work is done in a monochromatic blue color scheme.
